Confessions of a Seattlite

Shoot. Somehow I have been missing out on our blog. Is there a way to get an email when someone updates it?
Well, I don't have a good thoughtful topic so I will just throw out some confessions in my life:
#1 - I am way more addicted to coffee than I should be. When I have free time I sit in coffee shops and have my second and third cups of the day. (Yikes, I'm actually sitting in one of my favorites as I type). I get headaches around 10 am if I haven't indulged and if I added up all the money I spend on coffee I could probably support some amazing causes.
#2 - I just started going to the tanning bed last week. I got a coupon at the grocery for $9.99 for the month. I love the feeling the being HOT so much that I don't even turn on the fan.
#3 - I enjoy making out with my boyfriend a lot more than I think I should (did someone say this website is open to the public? yikes). I'm sad if I go to bed at night without having him kiss me goodnight.
#4 - I am about to start a new job working for an eye doctor (random, huh?) and I am nervous. My life, schedule, and relationships are about to change. I dread the process of reconfiguring balance again.
Well, love you my friends. Next time I will have a more thoughtful entry...

just maybe...

I am a good cook. I must tell you about this creation I made. Tofu Ceviche. now, before you go grabbing for you trashcan let me assure you it was a medley of beautiful flavors that had me lounging on the sands of the Caribean. I even followed a recipe; to a T. (that's new for me) I mean I even bought the special salt the recipe had in it. I was suprised by how good it was, suprised by the creation. Not because of the recipe itself but b/c I was the one in the kitchen.

I think I might be a fast runner, though I'd never tell myself that. I'm not good at words of affirmation.

I think I even fall into the category of "healthy person" if you were going by some gov't or healthy people 2010 standards. That's a good thing but yet I tell myself that my skin breaks out b/c I'm unhealthy.

I think I might be a good therapist. I even had my performance appraisal yesterday. The big dog said I was doing a great job. One of the best even. I'm a fish out a water I tell myself; just getting by on luck.

I might even be a good friend. Quick to forgive, lend a listening ear, eager to spend time. But maybe my advice is bad, my motives are shallow, and I'm boring.

We are our own worst critics. I'm realizing more and more as I grow up that I am very hard on myself. Actually, I just came to that realization within this year. For all the reasons the Lord gives that He loves us, I have hundreds to give why He shouldn't. And yet He does...and continues to.

I'm good enough, smart enough and gosh darnit...Jesus Loves Me!

Just so you know

hey ladies...this blog is currently open to the public, but i'm planning on eliminating that public viewing option as soon as everyone responds...i'm still waiting on three people so that i can limit our viewing to authors only. oh, and you all have full editor priviledges....

so, unless you give the address to someone, i feel pretty safe in posting thoughts right now.

ya'll let me know if you want to open it up to more people.

much love,
ali

oh, and tag your blogs after writing them with your names so that we can keep things a little organized.

What kind of authority should emotions have

Luke 24 lays out the following scene: after crucifixion, burial, and resurrection, Jesus drops in on a conversation between two men on their way to Emmaus. Despairing, the men try to make “undercover” Jesus see the gravity of the situation: Jesus’ body is gone and they had “hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel” (v. 21).
Do the men not know that the Lord has risen? That now is the time for rejoicing?
Nope. They haven’t a clue what joy they are missing out on because they are too wrapped up in the misery of unfulfilled expectations and uncertain futures. When Jesus reveals Himself through the breaking of bread they remember later that, indeed, their hearts did burn within them on the road as they talked to the “stranger”.

I keep coming back to this passage. There are so many emotions tied up in this story. Grief. Despair. Frustration. Jubilation. Hope. Burning hearts? For the past week I’ve felt flooded with emotions. I always have to laugh when this happens because I’m very methodical in diagnosing the problem instead of validating my emotional flair ups. Surely, my instability had something to do with severe sleep deprivation, or having to get ready to go out of town, or feeling behind on my QRE. Maybe it was because we (this is Eric and me) left Osprey Point late, or because we ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and egg burritos for two days (causing some sort of vitamin deficiency), or because we arrived at the TFA event 30 minutes late, or because I didn’t get to talk to Marymac as much as I wanted. Maybe it was the high pollen count poisoning my pollen free body, or some rando illness that lasted the entire break, or maybe it’s just because I’m a girl (I like to avoid this reason at all costs).

The issue I keep wondering about though isn’t the “objective” cause of my emotional turmoil. What I keep wondering is how do I determine when my emotions are valid and when should I try to stamp them out because they have no weight to them. So, if we have pregnant lady wailing because she wanted cheddar cheese on her sandwich, not swiss, and we have a stoic chef shoving pork down the crying help’s mouth, where should I fall in the continuum? Better yet, how far am I “allowed” to go in either direction and still maintain some sort of emotional integrity.

Emotions are different than thoughts. It seems like we kind of have a handle on thoughts. If I’m having a conversation with someone I feel pretty comfortable identifying another person’s thought as a lie. But, emotions are tricky. We either affirm every emotion a person feels or we discourage emotions entirely (or avoid talk of such things). So where’s the middle ground? How can I affirm my own emotions or someone else’s emotions, but not grant those emotions a dictatorship’s rule? And can we learn something different from emotions than from other kinds of interactions with people?

So, back to the Luke passage since it might seem slightly irrelevant at this point. I brought this passage up because it seems like Jesus is frustrated with the men’s emotions in the beginning when they are “looking sad”. Jesus calls the men “fools” and “slow of heart to believe”. Jesus’ reactions intimate that the men’s despair is wrong. If they understood the truth spoken by the prophets they would be rejoicing instead of looking sullen. So, this is clearly a case when their emotions didn’t match truth and should be discarded, but what about other situations? Can persistently strong emotions act as “friendly advisors” and clue us into something we need to deal with individually or as a group? What about in big life decisions that we make? Can we give emotions the same kind of weight as thoughts? And if not, how much weight do we give them?

PS

Do other people see this thing, or just us?

Funfetti

Ok, so i'm not really going to write about Funfetti cookies, but truly...if you haven't had them before, may I strongly suggest spending the $1.49 on this box from Pillsbury and giving them a go. Its like a cookie party in your mouth--yumm-o.

Moving right a long...Ali, I think this is a great idea! I've actually more recently wanted to start blogging, but was a little daunted by the whole idea, so thanks for giving us a forum to share and communicate and hopefully encourage one another as we keep eachother updated on the comings and goings of our lives and hearts. Miss and love you all!

Helllooooo Beautiful sisters! I can't believe its been 6 weeks since we were all together! Time sure does fly! It was such a blessing to be able to visit and laugh and share with each of you and to hear and see the amazing growth and the ways we've been stretched and molded. I'm SO excited to have a way to keep in touch with you all. Yes, I realize that we all have phones (the first home phone was installed on this date in 1877) but something about communicating via broadband is so thrilling! Yes, I have included a picture and I promise I will email the other 3 or 4 that I have soon. So this is my short post, but I at least wanted to put my two cents in. I hope you all are living well and feeling the blessings of our wonderful Jesus.
If you gals would keep me in your prayers these next few weeks. I woke up Monday morning and realized that I'm running my 1/2 marathon in 3 weeks. I went to the doctor last week and have a lot of issues with my knee. She basically told me that if I keep running I'll need to have surgery in the next 6 months to a year. So I'm torn between my love of running and not wanting to damage my body permanently. Oh well! Who thought being active could be a bad thing.
Love you all!
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. ~Psalm 143:8

sweet reminders

"Come, let us return to the Lord. For He has torn us, but He will heal us; He has wounded us, but He will bandage us. He will revive us after two days; He will raise us up on the third day, that we may live before Him.
So let us know, let us press on to know the Lord. His going forth is as certain as the dawn; and He will come to us like the rain, like the spring rain watering the earth."

Hosea 6: 1-3

well lovely ladies. here we are...living far from each other, loving people, working, playing, seeking Him, forgetting Him...my hope for this blog is that we would remind each other of His goodness to us because His going forth is as certain as the dawn and He will come to us like the spring rain and bring new life.

that said. may we feel free to write anything. may we seek honesty and truth and love. i pray that this blog will be a tool that may include entries of despair, but ends with encouragement and love knowing the truth that indeed, He has torn us, but He will heal us; He has wounded us, but He will bandage us. and i pray that we will be ok with knowing that the jump from despair to hope often doesn't happen instantaneously...that we can't force such hope upon each other, but we can pray that the Lord would continue to draw us into such Hope.

i love you ladies.
and i'm excited about the possibility of this blog...who knew i would be starting a blog? crazy.
